Vestavia Hills City Schools has announced that students at Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights will be dismissed early Friday due to traffic congestion issues that might arise from a planned protest at The Summit.
“Due to the potential for heavy traffic congestion during a planned Friday afternoon demonstration along U.S. 280, Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights will dismiss at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19. Extended Day activities scheduled for Friday at the school are also canceled,” a press release from the school system read.
Earlier this week, the Black Lives Matter-Birmingham group called for a “shutdown” of U.S. 280 in an apparent protest to the police officer-related deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner in New York.
Demonstration organizers have said they plan to meet on the lawn at the entrance of The Summit during one of the busiest shopping days of the holiday season.
