The road to re-establishing the UAB football program took a positive turn earlier this month when the University of Alabama at Birmingham established a formal UAB Athletics Foundation.
Formation of the 501(c)3 comes on the heels of a massive fundraising campaign and outreach spearheaded by Royal Cup Coffee Chief Executive Officer Emeritus Hatton Smith that began in July. The new foundation will have 24 board members, including Smith and other prominent Birmingham business professionals, charged with generating financial support and enthusiasm for the new football program and proposed facilities.
The foundation also hopes to generate funding and cultivate donors to provide scholarships to student athletes.
According to an article published by UAB News, head football coach Bill Clark said the new foundation is a major step for the Blazer football program and for UAB Athletics.
