Local Companies Dish Out the Best BBQ for Children’s Harbor
Children’s Harbor hosted its 19th annual Pig Iron BBQ Challenge at the Hoover Met RV Park on Oct. 16.
The Pig Iron BBQ Challenge is a family-friendly, corporate tailgate event where guests sample food prepared by sponsoring teams representing companies in the Birmingham area. This year, 43 teams competed in four categories: BBQ Rib, Sauce, Butt and Team Tent. The overall winners were American Tube for best rib, P&M Mechanical for best sauce and butt, and Trane/Hardy Corporation for the best team tent.
The event is a fundraiser for Children’s Harbor, a nonprofit that serves seriously ill children and their families. Children’s Harbor offers patients and their families two unique environments to strengthen family bonds and find balance and support during and after hospitalization. All of the services offered at both campuses are provided to families at no cost, thanks to many generous donors and volunteers.
Notable guests in attendance included Hoover Mayor Gary Ivey, Hoover City Council President Jack Wright, Hoover Chief of Police Nicholas Derzis, Hoover Fire Chief John Wingate and former Alabama Rep. Paul DeMarco.
