Two-time defending Class 7A State champion Mountain Brook High School made it three in a row May 14 with a second-round 7-over 295 to capture the large-school boys state title with a 588 team total. McGill-Toolen Catholic finished 11 strokes back at 599, Vestavia Hills was 13 strokes back with a 601 and Fairhope took fourth at 615.
The 71st AHSAA State Golf Championships were held at the Robert Trent Jones Capitol Hill Golf Club at Prattville.
The 36-hole tournament concluded Tuesday with Mountain Brook (7A), Muscle Shoals (6A), UMS-Wright (5A), Brooks (4A), Houston Academy (3A) and North Sand Mountain (1A/2A) won boys’ state crowns. Auburn (7A), Northridge (6A), Randolph (4A/5A) and Providence Christian (1A/3A) won girls’ state titles.
Thomas Ponder of Providence Christian had the low round of all classifications Monday and Tuesday, following his 4-under 68 with a 7-under 65 and ended the tourney 11-under 133 to capture overall low medalist honors. Providence finished second in the 4A boys’ championship race by one stroke to Brooks. Randolph’s Michaela Morard shot a 6-under 66 top all the girls’ competition with a 9-under 135 to in Class 4A/5A.
Mountain Brook’s team total (588) tied Class 3A state champion Houston Academy as the low team score of all classes.
Vestavia Hills High School’s Austin Coggin had the top 7A round Tuesday shooting 4-under 68 to earn low medalist honors with a 5-under 139 total over the both rounds. Reynolds Lambert and Gordon Sargent of Mountain Brook tied for second at 1-under 143. Lambert had a 71 Tuesday and Sargent shot a 71.First-day leader and 2018 low medalist William Wann shot 5-over 77 after a first-round 69 and was tied for fifth with McGill-Toolen Catholic’s Price Brown at 2-over 146.
