Radiation, Oncology Accelerated Research, also known as ROAR the Cure, recently announced that it will honor the late Jimmy Koikos of Bright Star Restaurant at its ninth annual ROAR James Bond Gala, to be held at The Club on Jan. 25.
Koikos, former co-owner of the legendary Bright Star Restaurant in Bessemer, died on Nov. 17, 2019 after a seven month battle with cancer.
“Jimmy was one of our earliest and one of our staunchest supporters each year as the ROAR organization seeks to raise funds to help fight cancer here at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Radiation Oncology department,” said Martha Thompson, president of ROAR the Cure. “His tireless support has enabled us to raise thousands of dollars for this very important cause.
“Jimmy was a consummate supporter and gentleman, and it is a tremendous honor to showcase him as our 2020 honoree,” Thompson added. “He was such a hero to the ROAR organization and to the physicians of UAB’s Radiation Oncology department whose efforts ROAR supports.”
This year’s gala will celebrate the life of Koikos, as well as the theme “License to Cure.” Festivities will include dinner, a live auction presented by Granger, Thagard & Associates and dancing to music by the band Total Assets.
The funds raised through the event will be matched dollar for dollar by UAB physicians.
