Way of the Cross Procession

Homewood churches will gather again this year in a Good Friday procession, “The Way of the Cross,” commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus. In recent years, some 200 to 300 people from the city have formed the procession, held each year since 1994. The procession begins at the amphitheater at Homewood Park. Stops will be made at area churches, where scripture is read and the cross is passed to the next bearer. The procession ends at Edgewood Presbyterian Church on Oxmoor Road. Shuttle service from Edgewood Presbyterian back to Homewood Park will be available. To participate, meet at the amphitheater at Homewood Park by 2 p.m. on Good Friday or join the procession anywhere along the way. University of Pennsylvania Law School Professor Harry Reicher will be the keynote speaker. An expert on the Holocaust and the law, Reicher will talk about “The Catalytic Impact of the Holocaust on the Human Rights Movement of the Post-World War II Era.” Included in the program will be the traditional memorial candle-lighting service to honor the community’s Holocaust survivors. Temple Beth-El will host its third annual Piggly Wiggly “When Pigs Fly Kosher BBQ Contest and Festival” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the synagogue, 2179 Highland Ave. South. The event features teams from Birmingham and around the country. Prizes are awarded for the Best Kosher Beef Brisket, Best Kosher Beef Ribs, Best Kosher Beans, Best Team Booth and Best Team Name. Trophies will also be awarded to first, second and third places in the new People’s Choice category for Best Kosher Beans and Best Kosher Brisket. An overall Grand Champion will also be chosen. No pork is permitted. This is a kosher event, so all ingredients, implements and cooking are monitored by Rabbi Michelle Goldsmith. The synagogue purchases all ingredients and provides all implements. When Pigs Fly includes a children’s zone, live music and the popular annual pickle-eating contest. Weight Management Camp

Camp Hargis YMCA
Children’s Hospital’s Center for Weight Management is registering participants for its third annual overnight weight management camp. The week-long “Camp SHINE” is June 3-20 at the Camp Hargis YMCA in Chelsea. The purpose of the camp is to educate at-risk or obese children about healthy lifestyle habits and to jumpstart weight loss through fun activities and a healthy diet. The camp also serves as a resource to parents who want to help their children maintain a healthier lifestyle. Camp SHINE will include cooking lessons, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, field trips, canoeing, dancing, hiking and many more kid-friendly activities. All camp counselors are affiliated with the William A. Daniel Adolescent Health Center, a joint initiative between Children’s and UAB. The program is coordinated by UAB physicians.
