On Sunday, August 10, more than 200 attendees came together at the Vestavia Hills Civic Center to celebrate inclusion and kick off football season at Down Syndrome Alabama’s 2nd annual “Football, Fashion & Fun” event — a high-energy afternoon of fashion, football, and heartfelt storytelling.
The runway came alive with 30 models — ages 1 to 25 — all members of the Down syndrome community, confidently showcasing spirited game-day looks from The Lilipad, GiGi’s Teen, Hibbett, and The Pants Store. The event highlighted not only fall fashion but also the individuality and joy of every participant.
Football spirit soared with special appearances from beloved mascots Big Al and Aubie, creating unforgettable memories with families and guests. Taco Mama kept the tailgate vibes going by providing complementary chips and salsa for all.
In a touching moment during the program, The Lilipad presented Down Syndrome Alabama with a $1,500 check from their summer in-house fundraiser, Bracelets for BK, held in honor of Brantley Kate Moellinger, a 15-year-old community member currently battling leukemia.
Following the fashion and spirit hour, Dr. Chandra Clark hosted a screening of the powerful documentary “Do Right: The Stallings Standard,” which tells the story of legendary Coach Gene Stallings and his son, John Mark, who had Down syndrome. Several parents in the audience shared personal stories of the phone calls they received from Coach Stallings upon the birth of their child with Down syndrome — a deeply moving reminder of the impact of compassion and connection. Missy Haughery, Executive Director of Down Syndrome Alabama, reflected on the significance of the event: “Each time we give an opportunity for our community to shine, we educate society of all the possibilities! This event does just that — shows what IS possible!”
