After three weeks of games on the road, Mountain Brook ran into a brick wall Friday, losing to 6A Region 6 foe Clay-Chalkville, 49-0. The loss comes one week after the Spartans’ thrilling overtime win against Homewood and their first game in front of home fans since early September.
Clay-Chalkville’s high-flying offense, led by senior quarterback Aaron Frye, put up more than 500 yards of offense while the Cougars’ defense bent at times but never broke, keeping the Spartans out of the red zone for most of the night.
The game got off to a favorable start for Mountain Brook after the Cougars stumbled on their opening drive, barely recovering a fumble on the second play of the game and going three-and-out. Forced to punt from deep in their own territory, the Spartans started their first drive with great field position at their own 44-yard line.
However, the Mountain Brook offense was unable to take advantage of the field position on its opening possession. The Spartans began with two runs for negative yards and an incomplete pass on third down, punting the ball right back to Clay-Chalkville after their own quick three-and-out.
On their next drive, the Cougars quickly hit paydirt on a picture-perfect 37-yard touchdown strike from Frye to Corey Barber to take a 7-0 lead with 4:32 to play in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Cougars started to show why they are one of the top-ranked teams in the country, busting the game wide open with three touchdowns. Running back Joshua Woods scored on a six-yard run with just over a minute played in the second period.
Woods scored his second touchdown five minutes later on a 36-yard run down the left side, pushing the Cougars’ lead to 21-0. Then, with 26 seconds to play in the first half, Frye found a wide-open Nasir Ray in the end zone to extend Clay-Chalkville’s lead to 28-0 at halftime.
The Spartans opened the second half with a promising drive. On the second play of the third quarter, quarterback Cayden Hofbauer rolled to his left and found wide receiver Archie Andrews over the middle for a 14-yard completion. A 15-yard personal foul against Clay-Chalkville gave Mountain Brook the ball deep in Cougar territory.
However, Clay-Chalkville’s defense held, forcing Mountain Brook to turn the ball over on downs. Moments later, Frye found a seam down the left side for a 51-yard touchdown, extending the Cougars’ lead to 35-0.
Less than two minutes later, Frye connected with Kaleb Amerson for a 76-yard touchdown pass, putting the Cougars up 42-0. The Cougars added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter, then took their foot off the gas with a comfortable 49-0 lead.
The Mountain Brook offense struggled to sustain drives all night long. Despite gaining 11 first downs, the Spartans converted only one of eight third downs, keeping the defense on the field to be worn down by the Clay-Chalkville offense. The passing game was especially shut down by the Cougar defense, as Hofbauer completed only two of 12 attempts for 47 yards.
Mountain Brook head coach Chris Yeager accepted responsibility for the loss after the euphoric but emotionally draining win over Homewood, while Clay-Chalkville was coming off a win over 7A behemoth Thompson. He also said the Cougars might be the state’s best team regardless of classification.
“I thought we fought hard, but that’s a very good football team. I believed it beforehand, and I believe it now, that’s the best team in the state,” Yeager said. “One of the most impressive things, coming off the win over Thompson and the way they handled that, they handled theirs better than we handled ours.”
Mountain Brook will play Region 6 rival Pinson Valley on Thursday night, October 6, instead of Friday, which Yeager said could present some obstacles for the Spartans.
“We’ve got a short week, so it’s a great challenge for us, but I’m really excited about the challenge,” Yeager said.
Mountain Brook gained 171 total yards—47 passing and 124 rushing—while Clay-Chalkville piled up 530 yards of offense, with 216 passing and 314 rushing.
The loss drops Mountain Brook to 4-3 overall, 1-2 in region play.
