The Mountain Brook Spartans put together one of their most complete performances of the season Friday night, steamrolling Fort Payne 35-14 in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
It was a statement win for a Mountain Brook squad that appears to be peaking at the right moment. Coming off a strong first-round victory of Mortimer-Jordan, the Spartans looked confident and focused from the opening kickoff, taking control early and never letting go.
The tone was set on the Spartans’ first possession when quarterback Cayden Hofbauer broke loose for a long run that set up a short touchdown by Stuart Andrews. On the next series, Hofbauer found daylight again, helping Mountain Brook move quickly downfield before Andrews scored his second touchdown of the night for a 14-0 lead.
The Spartans’ offense continued to click, mixing power running with timely passing. Midway through the second quarter, Hofbauer connected with receiver John Colvin on a perfectly timed 48-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 21-0. Hofbauer then added another score on the ground before running back Trey Vincent capped a near-perfect first half with a 60-yard touchdown run, giving Mountain Brook a commanding 35-0 advantage at the break.
By halftime, the Spartans had racked up 460 rushing yards and 555 total yards of offense, overwhelming Fort Payne’s defense with a balanced attack and relentless tempo.
Fort Payne, which entered the game on a nine-game winning streak, showed fight in the second half, putting together a pair of scoring drives to avoid the shutout. But by that point, the damage had been done. The Wildcats, who had averaged over 30 points per game during their streak, struggled to move the ball consistently against Mountain Brook’s defense.
The Spartans’ defense, led by its experienced front seven, held Fort Payne to just 304 total yards and only 100 yards rushing. Mountain Brook’s secondary also came up big, breaking up seven passes and limiting big plays through the air. Sophomore linebacker Josh Holloway led the defense with seven tackles, while senior linebacker Boyd Cooper added six, and senior defensive back Gaines Drew contributed five.
Offensively, Hofbauer once again proved to be the catalyst. The junior completed 6-of-8 passes for 95 yards and one touchdown, while adding 175 yards rushing and two scores on the ground. Andrews continued his consistent season with 26 carries for 169 yards and one touchdown, and Vincent provided an explosive spark with 111 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.
It was a dominant effort from all three phases, offense, defense, and special teams, as Mountain Brook improved to 9-3 and advanced to the Class 6A quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.
Next up for the Spartans is a home matchup against Muscle Shoals, one of the top teams in the state and undefeated at 11-0. The Trojans have been stingy on defense all season, but Mountain Brook’s balanced attack and playoff experience make for an intriguing matchup.
