The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) will honor Women’s History Month with its popular program, “The Women Gather: An Evening of Poetry and Music” in the Woods Community Meeting Room. Local poets and singers featured in ‘The Women Gather,” include Shaunteka Curry, Wafiyyah El-Amin, Shirley Ferrill, Mimi Latoine, The Lockhart Dance Theatre LaQuita Middleton-Holmes, Dakotah Murphee, Georgette Norman, llyshia Parker, Delores “Dee” Byrd-Smith, Jeanie Thompson, Miaya Webster, Evelyn Dilworth- Williams, and Alicia Johnson Williams. Priscilla Hancock Cooper, poet and BCRI Interim President and CEO will host the program.
“The Women Gather has become one of our most popular programs,” said Ms. Cooper. “Violence and race relations will be themes of one segment. Audience members will be invited to remember loved ones whose lives have been lost through homicide.”
BCRI has celebrated Women’s History Month with special programs, forums and conferences. This year, BCRI hosted weekly screenings of video interviews with women civil rights activists from its Oral History Project collection, in conjunction with the Birmingham NAACP.
