Mayor Ashley Curry and the city of Vestavia Hills will host the annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on April 23 at Vestavia Country Club. Micah McElveen, CEO and executive director of Vapor Ministries, will be the keynote speaker.
McElveen suffered a near-fatal surfing accident in 1995 that landed him in the ICU and left him a quadriplegic, shattering his dreams of becoming a collegiate athlete.
According to McElveen, during the many years of rehabilitation that restored the use of his limbs, the Bible verse “life is but a vapor” stuck with him.
“We’re not guaranteed a long life,” McElveen said in a release. “The truth is our time on earth is like a vapor. When you realize that, you are afforded an opportunity to live it differently.”
The verse inspired him to build Vapor Ministries and work to alleviate poverty in developing countries.
McElveen will discuss his journey at the event, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at vestaviahills.org.
