In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, the Vestavia Hills-based non-profit KultureCity will host the Stay At Home Race for Autism on Sunday, April 26.
The virtual will begin at 10 a.m., with registered participants joining virtually through the video conferencing platform Zoom.
According to KultureCity officials, the organization will be attempting to break a world record for “most people running simultaneously online.”
Participants can register online for $45 and are asked to complete a 5k, 10k or 13.1 miles in any manner or location of their choosing honor of a child or individual with autism.
Celebrity participants joining the race will include former democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and his wife Evelyn Yang, NBA All-Star Dominique Wilkins, Christopher Gorham of “Insatiable,” and Kelly AuCoin and Stephen Kunken of “Billions.”
“By hosting this virtual race, we hope to raise awareness for the autism community and those with sensory processing needs, as well as bring a sense of togetherness and shared success to participants during this challenging time,” said KultureCity co-founder Dr. Julian Maha.
According to recent statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control, one in 54 children in the United States has autism. Children with autism can face challenges with communication, an insistence on sameness and routine and sensory sensitivities, Kulture City officials noted, which are heightened during the current pandemic.
All of the proceeds from the virtual run will benefit the organization’s effort to support children with autism and their families as they face new challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
