Filmmakers and scholars from around the world will converge on the University of Alabama at Birmingham Nov. 1-3 to discuss the role filmmaking plays in the international struggle for civil and human rights. The fifth annual Foreign Language Film Conference is free and open to the public and sponsored by UAB’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. This year’s event is an homage to the 49th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham Sept. 15, 1963. More than 60 scholars, filmmakers, students and professors from Russia, Italy, Canada, France and other countries will join the dialogue during the event. Sessions will include “Faith, Strife and Exodus: Religion in Film,” “Riots and Rights Through Time and Space” and “From Horror to Queer: Contemporary Self Image in Film.” France’s Sarah Maldoror will screen her film “Aime Cesaire” Nov. 1 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at DoubleTree Hotel, 808 20th St. South. “The Repentant” by Merzak Allouache of Algeria will be screened Nov. 2 from 7-9 p.m. at UAB Hill University Center, Room 105. Italian Stefano Savona’s film “Tahir: Liberation Square” will be screened Nov. 3 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at DoubleTree Hotel. For a full list of events, go to www.uab.edu/languages/flfc.
