The Alabama Humanities Foundation, AHF, will host its annual Alabama Humanities Awards Luncheon on Sept. 26 at the Wynfrey Hotel. The luncheon begins at noon and ends at 1:30 p.m.
New Birmingham-Southern president Gen. Charles C. Krulak will deliver the keynote address. Elaine Hughes will be honored as the 2011 Alabama Humanities Award recipient. Wells Fargo will receive the 2011 Charitable Organization in the Humanities Award, and the 2011 Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarships will be presented.
Gen. Krulak served 35 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. His last position was as Commandant of the Marine Corps and as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Elaine Hughes has been an active and acclaimed champion of the humanities throughout her personal life, professional service and almost four decades at the University of Montevallo as a professor of American literature with a specialty in Southern and contemporary literature.
Wells Fargo has a long history of helping the Alabama Humanities Foundation and the community. In 2010, Wells Fargo contributed more than $3.9 million to more than 500 Alabama organizations that are making an impact on Alabama residents.
The awards luncheon will also recognize five elementary teachers receiving the 2011 Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will support their professional development and classroom enhancements in history and civics.
