The Alabama Symphony Orchestra was scheduled to perform Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony on May 29 and 30.
Though the performances have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the orchestra announced today that they will replace the shows with a socially-distanced 5k.
The Tchaik 5k – pronounced “CHAI-k” and short for “Tchaikovsky” – is a virtual 5k that will pair with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
The ASO will provide the full four movements of the symphony, which lasts just over 46 minutes. Participants can run at any time, at any pace and in any location over the course of the week of May 23-30.
Organization officials noted that they are asking participants to practice social distancing whether running inside on the treadmill, or maintaining a six-foot distance from others while outdoors.
Registration is $35 per adult and $25 for students and children, and participants can run individually or with a team. Those who register before May 23 will receive a race-day t-shirt.
