The Darter Festival creates civic pride by celebrating the Watercress, Vermillion, and Rush Darters. Alabama surpasses all eastern states in plant and animal diversity, ranking fifth in the nation. The Festival will highlight our Darter populations within the Turkey Creek Watershed and the extraordinary gift of Alabama’s biodiversity through the following events and activities:
• Introduction of the exclusive Darter Ale provided by Good People Brewing Company
• Jim ‘N Nicks Barbecue
• Live performances by Banditos, John Scalici, and the Erynias Tribe dancers
• A Tour de Ham bicycle parade which will culminate at Railroad Park. An anticipated 150 riders will participate with special prizes being awarded for original fish costumes.
• Pop-up interactive education events discussing the Darter and other distinct species in Birmingham
• Darter kite painting and kite flying
• A Darter art sculpture exhibit featuring works from Altamont High School, ASFA, Spring Valley School, Birmingham-Southern College and University of Montevallo
