Allene and Foots Parnell lost their 22-year-old daughter, Carleton, to cancer in 2002, but instead of giving up, they devoted their energy to improving cancer research and care.
Foots spearheaded a $15 million campaign to establish the Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He also served as president of the advisory board of UAB’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center from 2011-2012 and continues to play an active role.
For their contributions, the Parnells are being honored during UAB’s 39th Annual ArtBlink Gala, a fundraiser for the Fund for Excellence, which is focused on high-priority research efforts.
“We are pleased to honor the Parnells for their unwavering dedication to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and their profound impact on our community,” said Laura McDonald, president of the advisory board. “Their commitment to this cause embodies the very spirit of compassion and community that we cherish. We celebrate not just their philanthropic efforts, but their extraordinary hearts. Their legacy reminds us that even in the face of adversity, we can make a difference and bring light into the lives of those affected by cancer.”
ArtBlink will be Feb. 3 at the Kirklin Clinic. It begins at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails and conversation. At 7 p.m., artists will begin creating new artworks and a silent auction on the items will open. While the artists work, guests will partake in dinner and dancing, and the auction closes at 9 p.m.
Tickets will be available beginning Jan. 1 at $350 each. Visit artblink.org for more information.
