Homewood followed up last week’s win over Mountain Brook with another dominant performance Friday night, soundly defeating Pelham 42-7 in 5A, Region 4 action. With the win, the Patriots improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in region play
Homewood held a 13-7 and end of the first quarter before scoring 29 unanswered points, shutting out the Panthers over the final three quarters.
Homewood was balanced offensively, piling up 415 total yards with 207 through the air and 208 on the ground. The Patriots averaged 7.5 yards per play and converted seven of nine third-down opportunities while allowing no sacks.
Quarterbacks Jack Myers and Timothy Roshell combined to complete 10 of 18 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Myers threw for 126 yards, while Roshell added 81 yards through the air and led Homewood on the ground with 64 yards on seven carries.
Beckham Newell provided the biggest spark in the passing game, catching four passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, including a 54-yard score. Reid Goldstein added two receptions for 54 yards, including a 49-yard gain.
The Patriots spread the wealth on the ground. Jackson Chapleau, Cyn-Mauree Debruce, Tyler Betts and Myers each scored rushing touchdowns as Homewood finished with nine runs of at least 10 yards.
Defensively, Homewood held a Pelham offense that had scored 111 points through its first three games to just seven. The Panthers managed 241 total yards and converted only five of 11 third downs and none of their two fourth-down attempts.
Homewood travels to Helena next Friday for another Region 4 matchup.
John Carroll Shuts Out St. John Paul II, 44-0
John Carroll Catholic bounced back in a big way Thursday night, shutting out St. John Paul II Catholic 44-0 in Huntsville. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 2- 2 and captured their first region win of the season.
The win was a strong response for John Carroll after a 51-7 loss to American Christian Academy the previous week. The Cavaliers are now 1-1 in Private School Class AA, Region 2 play and have won both of their road games this season. John Carroll returns home Friday to face Lee-Scott Academy in another region matchup.
