Girl Scout Troop #26020, made up of Homewood Middle School seventh graders, have been working with Pathways Women and Children’s Shelter to earn their Silver Awards. The troop partnered with organizations, businesses and individuals in Homewood to learn how to create and raise money for Pathways Pages, a little free library inside Pathways specifically for its residents.
The troop learned how to choose books for different ages and reading levels and how to provide readers with books that reflect their lives and provide a window into other people’s lives. To complete the project, the troop had help from Cristina Castor, Head of Children’s Services at Homewood Public Library; Mary Liz Ingram, Director of Trinity UMC’s Outreach Hub; Little Professor Bookshop and Thank You Books. The Scouts raised money with bake sales at Homewood Park and the West Homewood Athletic Complex and received tremendous support from the Homewood community.
Scouts and Pathways residents celebrated the ribbon cutting for Pathways Pages little free library on May 22. Learning why women and children come to Pathways and the challenges they face was an education in grace and humility.
