Mountain Brook opened the 2026 season in dominant fashion on the road Friday night, rolling to a 60-18 win over Hueytown. The Spartans jumped out to a 26-0 first-quarter lead and never trailed.
Mountain Brook’s opening score came on a 9-yard touchdown run from John Colvin, followed by a successful two-point conversion. The Spartans expanded the lead to 16-0 just over a minute later when a blocked Hueytown punt was scooped up by Graham Smith and returned 25 yards for a touchdown, with another two-point conversion. A 37-yard William Russ field goal and a later touchdown pushed the lead to 26-0 by the end of the opening quarter.
The Golden Gophers, who reached the Class 6A quarterfinals a season ago before falling to Benjamin Russell, got on the board in the second quarter but couldn’t slow down the Spartans’ ground attack. Mountain Brook tacked on 21 more points in the second quarter alone, including a quick-strike score set up by a Hueytown interception, before taking a commanding lead into halftime.
Colvin had a monster night, finishing with 22 carries for 159 yards and three rushing touchdowns, adding two catches for 32 yards and another score through the air — four total touchdowns.
Quarterback Peyton James was efficient in the passing game, completing seven of ten attempts for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Backup quarterback Caden Bryant added a 37-yard touchdown strike on his only pass attempt of the night. Archie Andrews (4 catches, 67 yards, one touchdown) and Brock Wilkinson (2 catches, 52 yards, one touchdown) were Mountain Brook’s leading receiveres.
The Spartans controlled the game in nearly every statistical category, finishing with 394 total yards to Hueytown’s 349, and holding a lopsided edge on the ground, 243 rushing yards to just 64 for the Golden Gophers. Mountain Brook also won the possession battle (27:18 to 20:42), converted 7 of 10 third downs compared to Hueytown’s 3 of 11, and cashed in on both of its two-point conversion attempts while Hueytown was 0-for-3 on similar tries.
Mountain Brook now leads the all-time series with Hueytown in eight of the last 11 meetings, including ing a narrow miss a year ago when the Spartans needed overtime to beat the Golden Gophers 30-27.
Mountain Brook travels to Mobile next week to face UMS-Wright on Friday, August 28.
