Mountain Brook left little doubt in its first-round playoff matchup, cruising to a 38-0 victory over Mortimer Jordan on Thursday night. The game, originally scheduled for Friday, was moved up a day due to expected inclement weather, but the Spartans didn’t miss a beat, turning in one of their most complete performances of the season.
From the opening possession, Mountain Brook controlled every phase of the game. A long punt return set up the Spartans with great field position early, and senior running back Stuart Andrews finished the drive with a 23-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. The Spartans extended their lead with a creative reverse pass from Archie Andrews to John Colvin for a 55-yard touchdown later in the first half, followed by a 27-yard field goal from William Russ to make it 17-0 at the break.
In the second half, Mountain Brook’s offense found another gear. Trey Vinson capped an early third-quarter drive with a 17-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Cayden Hofbauer connected with Colvin again for a 48-yard score. Gabe Smith put an exclamation point on the night with a 64-yard sprint to the end zone in the fourth quarter as the Spartans continued to wear down the Blue Devils’ defense.
Mountain Brook’s balance on offense was evident in the final numbers. The Spartans piled up 403 total yards — 257 on the ground and 146 through the air — while holding Mortimer Jordan to just 101 total yards and only three first downs. Hofbauer completed six of ten passes for 96 yards and added 37 more on the ground. Smith led all rushers with 103 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while Andrews contributed 84 yards and a score. Colvin was the top target in the passing game with three receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Equally impressive was the Spartans’ defense, which stifled Mortimer Jordan’s attack all night. The Blue Devils managed just 67 passing yards and 34 on the ground while converting only one of nine third-down attempts. Mountain Brook’s defensive front consistently pressured the quarterback, limited running lanes, and forced multiple punts in short order.
With the victory, Mountain Brook (8-3) advances to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs for the sixth straight season. The Spartans will travel to face Fort Payne on Friday, November 14.
