Mountain Brook High School reeled off five wins in a row at 145, 152, 160, 170 and 184 pounds to fend off Mortimer Jordan High School 33-32 Saturday to earn the final semifinal berth in the AHSAA 2022 Duals Wrestling Tournament.
The Spartans will travel to Arab Tuesday for a Class 5a/6A semifinal match and a chance at their first AHSAA Duals Tourney championship match appearance. Semifinals in Class 7A, 5A/6A and 1A/4A will be held Tuesday at school sites with winners advancing to the Duals finals at Bill Harris Arena on Friday, January 21. The Class 7A championship match will kick off the action at noon, followed by the 5A/6A finals at 2:30 p.m., and the 1A/4A title match at 5 p.m.
Mortimer Jordan won eight of the 14 weight division bouts Saturday, but Mountain Brook posted pins in five of its six matches to squeak out the win. Nathan McCain won the 132-pound match for the Spartans with a pin in the third period at 5:11. Harrison England won at 145 pounds in a very tough 10-8, SV 1 win over Mortimer Jordan’s Conner Horton. The Spartans then reeled off pins by Woody Fipps at 152 pounds, Gray Ortis at 160, Will Robertson at 170 and Michael Lorino at 182 pounds.
The Class 7A semifinals features defending state duals champ Thompson, which has won three duals titles in a row, at home Tuesday against Smiths Station. Last year’s AHSAA Wrestling State Champs Vestavia Hills, which lost to Thompson in the duals finals last year, will be traveling to Hewitt-Trussville.
In Class 5A/6A duals semifinals, Arab, which won the 1A/5A duals tourney title in 2020, hosts Mountain Brook and McAdory travels to Gulf Shores.
