Participants of the ninth annual Pelham Polar Plunge came to Oak Mountain Saturday morning — some dressed in costumes — to support Special Olympics and to help raise awareness about the Inclusion Revolution.
At the time of the plunge, the temperature outside was 40 degrees Fahrenheit. That didn’t stop plungers from running full speed toward the water. After giving one of the “divers” a high five, the participants swam out of the water, changed clothes and warmed up by the bonfire.
The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19. However, Birmingham police officer Sgt. Wytasha Carter was killed in the line of duty earlier that week, and his funeral was scheduled in Trussville on Jan. 19. The Polar Plunge event organizers decided to reschedule the plunge in honor of the fallen officer.
