A Feb. 23 event in Homewood to raise awareness and money for pancreatic cancer research attracted a record number of participants and surpassed organizers’ fundraising goals.
More than 900 walkers and runners participated in the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s 5K and walk at Homewood Central Park.
So far, the event has raised $94,000, said Lou Ellen Williams, PanCAN’s media representative. The goal was to raise $70,000.
“There are two more months left to donate. We might make it to $100,000. This is unbelievably huge for us, and we couldn’t be happier,” Williams said.
Ronda Robinson of Fox 6 was the event’s emcee.
Friends and family gathered at the park were entertained by music, had their pictures taken in a photo booth, had their faces painted, shot hoops at a giant inflatable basketball goal and enjoyed food and fellowship.
A Zumba warm-up before the 5K and walk was led by 77-year-old Zumba instructor Suanne Ferguson.
