Hannah Home Shelby will host the fifth annual Run Away 8K Race and Family Fun Walk Oct. 22 at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. The 8K begins at 8 a.m. and the walk at 9 a.m. Awards will be given at 10 a.m.
Hannah Home Shelby is a 13,000-square foot Christ-centered home that serves the needs of abused women and their children. It is a ministry of the King’s Homes and serves the Great Birmingham area by providing long-term care, spiritual healing and a loving environment.
Each year Hannah Home Shelby Auxiliary sets out to raise more than $40,000 for the operating expenses of the home for abused and homeless women and children fleeing domestic violence. This fundraising event began in 2007 with a one-mile walk/run that raised more than $20,000 in sponsorship and pledges and continues to grow each year.
The 8K Race is a USATF certified course that begins at the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Health & Wellness facility and winds through the neighborhood of Greystone Founders and finishes back at One Nineteen. In addition to the race, other activities include a children’s play area with inflatables and games, and free health screenings, as well as a new addition to the event – an Alagasco Cooking Demonstration by Chef Chris Vizzina, president of Slow Foods Birmingham with Jones Valley Urban Farms.
Verizon Wireless will be collecting phones for its HopeLine® program. Bring used wireless phones and accessories from any wireless carrier to donate to HopeLine®. Exclusive to Verizon, HopeLine® turns these phones into support for victims of domestic violence through recycling and reuse as well as cash grants to non-profit organizations.
Registration for the race is $25 for an individual runner/walker through Oct. 1 and $30 after. Student registration is $15. Register online at www.active.com or at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. Pre-registered packet pick-up is Oct. 20 and 21 at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. Only the first 150 to register will receive race T-shirts.
