Mountain Brook dropped a low-scoring nailbiter on the road to the much-improved Pell City Panthers, 10-3, Friday night.
The contest marked only the seventh time these two teams have met, the second since the Spartans moved to Class 6A, Area 6 in 2024, a 41-14 win over the Panthers at Mountain Brook High School.
Pell City took little time taking advantage of the short field, converting on a fourth down before hitting on a 22-yard run for the game’s only touchdown. With just over 7 minutes to play in the first quarter, Pell City held an early 7-0 lead over Mountain Brook.
The remainder of the game was a good old-fashioned defensive battle as neither offense was able to gain serious momentum. Both teams failed to score in the second quarter, and Pell City extended the lead to 10-0 on a 23-yard field goal on the Panthers’ first series of the third quarter.
Mountain Brook finally got on the board on a 27-yard field goal by Anderson Roberts with 8:41 to play in the game, pulling within a touchdown. Mountain Brook’s defense held Pell City to several punting situations from deep in their own territory.
With a chance to either tie the game or take the lead, Mountain Brook quarterback Cayden Hofbauer pushed the Spartans into scoring position multiple times in the fourth quarter, connecting on key passes to Lawson McKnight, Sam Smith, and Trey Vinson, relying on running back Stuart Andrews for positive yards, and scrambling to keep drives alive.
However, Pell City’s defense held during each surge, keeping the Spartans out of the end zone. Hofbauer was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter — once on a deep pass with just under 4 minutes to play, and again on 4th down with just 11 seconds on the clock, ending any chance of a come-from-behind win. Pell City took a knee on the next play to win in a close one, 10-3.
“I think both teams played their guts out. It was a heck of a high school football game. Hats off to them,” said Mountain Brook Head Coach Chris Yeager. “I felt like our kids competed to the end. We had our chances. We just have to get better at executing.”
Hofbauer put up solid numbers, completing 18 of 31 passing attempts for 174 yards, and gaining 55 yards on 11 carries. Other standouts were McKnight with 9 carries for 47 yards, and wide receiver Smith with 101 yards on 7 receptions.
Overall, Mountain Brook gained 289 total yards on the night — 174 passing and 115 rushing — while Pell City only gained 158 total yards, 74 passing and 84 rushing.
However, despite moments of brilliance, the Mountain Brook offense couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone, even after running 27 plays in Panther territory and outgaining Pell City by more than 130 yards. Additionally, the offense converted on third down on only 3 of 13 attempts, went 0-for-2 on fourth-down tries, and missed two field goal attempts.
Yeager said the offense needs to iron a few things out with teams like Clay-Chalkville, Oxford, and Pinson Valley looming on the schedule.
“On offense, we have to be more consistent,” Yeager said. “To me, that’s the biggest thing; consistency.”
Yeager said he is proud of the Spartans’ defensive effort, holding Pell City to only 10 points on the road. Standouts on defense include McKnight with 10 tackles, and Boyd Cooper with 7 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble and recovery.
“Our defense played a heck of a game. I felt like the defense showed a lot of grit and played a good solid football game,” Yeager said.
With the loss, Mountain Brook drops to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in 6A Area 6 play. The Spartans will travel down Interstate 20 to take on area rival Oxford on Friday, September 19, at 7 p.m.
