Mountain Brook’s playoff run ended Friday night at Spartan Stadium, falling 24-7 against undefeated Muscle Shoals in the AHSAA Class 6A quarterfinals. The Spartans struggled to build momentum offensively after turnovers and couldn’t find consistency.
On the opening drive, the Spartan defense held Muscle Shoals to a three-and-out. Mountain Brook responded, moving the ball into Trojan territory, but couldn’t convert on fourth down. Muscle Shoals took advantage, driving down the field and scoring on an 11-yard run by quarterback Kade Clemmons to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Mountain Brook’s offense gained positive yardage on the ground early as Quarterback Cayden Hofbauer picked up first downs on keeper runs. The Spartans drove deep, but an incomplete pass on fourth down inside the 30-yard line gave possession back to Muscle Shoals.
The Trojans wasted no time, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run set up by a long pass play by Clemmons, extending the lead to 14-0 in the second quarter. John Colvin provided a spark for the Spartans, returning a kickoff for 61 yards, setting Mountain Brook up at the Muscle Shoals 33-yard line.
However, the Trojan defense stopped Mountain Brook’s momentum, and the Spartans were forced to punt. Muscle Shoals tacked on three points before halftime, taking a 17-0 lead at the break.
Mountain Brook’s defense fought hard in the third quarter. The Trojans missed a field goal attempt, and the Spartans kept Muscle Shoals out of the end zone, keeping themselves in the game.
The Spartans finally got in the scoring column in the fourth quarter as Hofbauer hooked up with Sam Smith on a 46-yard completion. On the next play, John Colvin ran 21 yards for the touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-7 with just over five minutes remaining.
Mountain Brook’s onside kick attempt was recovered by Muscle Shoals near midfield, dampening the Spartans’ comeback hopes. The Trojans sealed the game with a 25-yard touchdown run to expand the lead to 24-7. The Spartans’ final drive was stopped short after a turnover, and the Trojans ran out the clock.

Mountain Brook finished the game with 230 total yards.137 passing yards, 93 rushing yards, and 12 first down conversions.
After the final whistle, head coach Chris Yeager reflected on the loss and what this season meant.
“First of all, to them, Coach Basden, his staff, that team, it’s a great football team,” Yeager said. “Probably one of the best defenses that we’ve ever played against, and they’ve done a great job coaching up. I tip my hat to them.”
Yeager talked about what this season meant for his players.
“We got to do something that very few people get to do. We got to be football players, high school football players,” Yeager said. “The things that you give away, the things that you sacrifice for, your teammates, your community, in this game, are the things that you walk away with from this game, and they walked away with a lot.”
For the seniors who played their final game in a Spartan uniform, Yeager had plenty of respect.
“They started this journey 10 years ago. When they started out in a Rec league, they were Cowboys, Falcons, Seahawks, and they dreamed of being a Spartan one day,” Yeager said. “They got to be Spartans, and to me, when you’re a Spartan, you never clock out. You are a Spartan 24/7, and to me, they represented this community, this school, and each other with great honor. I’m really proud of them.”
After winning five straight heading into the quarterfinal matchup, Mountain Brook’s season concludes with a 9-4 record. The Spartans now look ahead to next season.
