As Saint George Melkite Catholic Church celebrates its centennial year in 2021, it also prepares for its 39th Middle Eastern Food Festival scheduled for Sept. 23-25.
Due to a resurgence of the COVID-19 virus, festival organizers have modified this year’s festival out of concern for the safety of patrons and parishioners.
This year, the festival will be limited to online, pickup and delivery orders; a drive-thru; walk-up orders; and outdoor seating.
“We hoped to have a full-fledged festival, but modifications have been made in accordance to CDC guidelines for the safety of our supporters and parishioners,” said co-chair Annette Ritchey.
The Food Festival will take place at Saint George Melkite Catholic Church, near UAB at 425 16th Avenue South. The hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Lunch orders of $100 or more can be delivered within 5 miles of St. George on Thursday and Friday. Delivery will be available between 10:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Place orders on Sept. 22 for Thursday lunch delivery and Sept. 23 for Friday lunch delivery.
The menu includes baked kibbee, stuffed grape leaves, spinach pies, meat pies, falafel, Mediterranean style chicken and more. Vegetarian plates and sides will be available as well. For dessert, an array of boxed Middle Eastern sweets will be offered.
Tours of the Byzantine church will be conducted Thursday and Friday evenings and all day Saturday. Masks are required.
Ten percent of proceeds raised will benefit local and diocesan charities.
