The Dance Foundation will present Freeform, a dance performance featuring students and guest artists, on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. via livestream, thedancefoundation.org/freeform.
The 45-minute program includes a mix of dances by students in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and musical theatre classes as well as dance works by guest artists.
According to a release, guest artist Margi Cole will perform her original work “My Sufi Tale,” which uses humor and vulnerability to explore a story about survival.
Guest Therese Laeger will premiere her new choreography “The Table.” Set in a liminal space, the table represents the female protagonist contemplating the simultaneous presence of past, present, and future.
The program will also include a dance film by Rebecca Salzer that is an intimate, unguarded exploration of maleness and community. The Dance Foundation officials note that in the film, Salzer captures the vitality, competitiveness and tenderness of male physicality.
Audience members are invited to participate in the virtual silent auction before the show, featuring 10 packages that include gift certificates to restaurants and pampering, tickets to performances and local art. Winners will be announced before the Dec. 11 performance.
Proceeds from the silent auction benefit The Dance Foundation’s mission to teach the art of dance to all, inspiring creativity, curiosity and confidence. The organization provides dance classes to children in social service agencies and schools throughout Birmingham, tuition-assistance to students in their Studio Program who are in need, and affordable studio and performance space for artists and organizations who need a place to call home.
