The Mountain Brook Spartans shut out the Huffman Vikings, 43-0, during homecoming Friday, picking up a key 6A Region 6 win in the process.
The Spartans opened the scoring with a 20-yard pass from Cayden Hofbauer, scrambling to his right, to John Colvin for the score. The extra point was no good, and at the end of the first quarter, Mountain Brook led 6-0.
In the second quarter, the Spartans blew the doors off the hinges, scoring 23 points to build a commanding 30-point lead. Trey Vinson scored on an eight-yard run, followed by a successful 2-point conversion, extending Mountain Brook’s lead to 14-0. Soon after, Stuart Andrews plowed ahead for a one-yard touchdown, his eighth of the season, to put Mountain Brook up 21-0.
Later in the quarter, the Spartan defense forced a safety, pushing the lead to 23-0. Moments later, Vinson cut across the middle of the field, found the edge, and darted in for another eight-yard touchdown.
The second half saw more dominance from Mountain Brook on offense and defense as the Spartans added touchdown runs from Andrews and Gabe Smith en route to the 43-0 win.
Hofbauer completed 9 of 14 passing attempts for 135 yards and a touchdown. Andrews was the leading rusher, gaining 79 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns, followed by Vinson with 57 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.
The win improves Mountain Brook’s record to 6-3 overall, 3-2 in region play, and third place behind Clay-Chalkville and Pell City. Mountain Brook will end the season at home against region foe Shades Valley on Friday, October 24.
Vestavia Hills 56, Tuscaloosa County 10
The Vestavia Hills Rebels exploded out of the gate Friday night and never looked back, defeating Tuscaloosa County in a lopsided 56-10 Class 7A Region 3 matchup on the road.
The Vestavia Hills offense scored touchdowns on its first four possessions, building a commanding 28-0 lead before the end of the first quarter, in one of the Rebels’ most complete performances of the 2025 season.
Vestavia Hills scored on the first play of the game as Luke Stubbs took the handoff from quarterback Price LeMaster, galloping 68 yards for the score. Before you could unwrap a concession-stand hot dog, Vestavia Hills led 7-0.
The Rebels’ rushing dominance continued throughout the opening quarter. LeMaster—getting the nod over regular starting quarterback Charlie Taffee—scored on a five-yard run, followed by Noah Boylan with touchdowns of eight yards and one yard to end the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, LeMaster threw for his only touchdown pass, connecting with Will Ainsworth for 13 yards, pushing Vestavia Hills’ lead to 35-0 at halftime.
Major Weaver got into the act in the third quarter with a three-yard touchdown run with 8:18 on the clock, and Carter Stagner added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter for eight and 47 yards.
The Vestavia Hills defense also had an outstanding night, holding Tuscaloosa County to just 179 total yards, all on the ground, as they went 0-for-3 passing with one interception. The Wildcats’ lone touchdown came late in the third quarter on a short run by C.J. Hutchins, while adding a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter. The Rebels’ defense dominated the line of scrimmage, holding Tuscaloosa County to just 3.6 yards per carry.
The Rebels also controlled the game’s tempo despite possessing the ball for only 18 minutes, thanks to their quick-strike efficiency—six of their scoring drives lasted fewer than two minutes.
LeMaster was perfect through the air, completing all ten of his passing attempts for 108 yards and a touchdown. Luke Stubbs led the Rebels in receiving with four catches for 46 yards, followed by Grayson Harper with two catches for 29 yards, and Boylan with a pair of receptions for 21 yards.
Leading Vestavia Hills in rushing was Major Weaver with 13 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown, followed by Boylan with nine carries for 88 yards and two scores, and Stagner with four carries for 56 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, Vestavia Hills improves to 6-2 overall, 4-2 in region action, and is now in third place behind Thompson and Hewitt-Trussville. The Rebels host region rival Hoover on Friday, October 24
