There have been more than 19 pedestrian traumas treated at Children’s of Alabama so far in 2019, which is a 58 percent increase compared to this time last year. That’s why students at Bluff Park Elementary School participated in a “walking school bus” event this morning prior to the start of school.
The walking school bus started at Shades Cliff Park. Then students, parents and Bluff Park staff walked together to school where they participated in a program recognizing a pedestrian safety poster contest.
Bluff Park has one of the largest percentage of walkers than any other school in the metro Birmingham area. Additionally, with Halloween and trick-or-treating this month, pedestrian safety is particularly relevant.
“We know that children learn through experience, and walking with an adult teaches children to obey traffic laws and recognize potentially dangerous situations,” said Children’s of Alabama in a media release.
